Men's Jewelry: Couture or Bling?

Men with a sense of style know that accessories aren’t just for women anymore. Guys everywhere spice up their looks and stay current with the latest trends and fashions by picking the most tasteful and trendy pieces of jewelry. Here’s a quick guide to the latest trends in men’s jewelry.

The Classics

While trends come and go, a classic sense of style will always work for any man. Look at those old films with Cary Grant or the Rat Pack and you’ll notice that they would look sharp and stylish even today. The classic and most important piece of jewelry any man should have is a watch. Your timepiece says a lot about you, and is the sine qua non for any man’s repertoire of accessories. The latest trends in watch fashion include over-sized faces and bands of bold colors. Check out Tag Heuer, Rolex and Citizen along with other classic watchmakers. Also, a simple wedding band if a man is married is traditional—beware the gaudy or the flashy, gentlemen stick with the subtle.

Bling

The style, fashions and accessories sported by the biggest hip hop stars are the premier fashion statements of our time. Most guys can’t pull off the full hip hop gear, but a bit of flashy jewelry can give you some bling that will catch all the right eyes. If you do embrace a hip hop aesthetic, invest in a medallion or necklace of some sort—the flashier, the better. If you don’t, a more muted necklace—or better yet a bracelet of some sort—will serve you well.

Beware the Piercings

Be sure you understand that the left lobe stud earring has become synonymous with midlife crisis and the hopelessly square trying desperately to look cool. If you have a pierced ear, go with diamonds, and consider getting both your ears done. Also consider your brow, your sceptum or your lip—all popular facial piercings. Nipples are also fashionable, but these of course aren’t much for showing off (except to a select crowd).

Less is More

Men’s fashion is meant to stay out of the way of the ladies. If you are a flamboyant man, and look good in shocking, elaborate gear—by all means, do what works for you. If you are like most guys, when it comes to jewelry err on the side of understatement. The alternative is looking like a gangster or Liberace, and nobody wants that.
